Parametrized and relational systems

Parametrized and relational systems

(p.78) 3 Parametrized and relational systems
Quantum Gravity

Claus Kiefer

Oxford University Press

This chapter considers systems that share common features with quantum gravity but which are much simpler to study. It starts with the parametrized non-relativistic particle and the relativistic particle. The free bosonic string and parameterized field theories are then discussed at some length. The chapter proceeds with a discussion of relational dynamical systems such as the model pioneered by Barbour and Bertotti. It concludes with a general section on constrained systems.

Keywords:   Reparametrization invariance, constrained systems, parameterized particle and field theory, relativistic particle, free bosonic string, Barbour-Bertotti model
