This chapter considers systems that share common features with quantum gravity but which are much simpler to study. It starts with the parametrized non-relativistic particle and the relativistic particle. The free bosonic string and parameterized field theories are then discussed at some length. The chapter proceeds with a discussion of relational dynamical systems such as the model pioneered by Barbour and Bertotti. It concludes with a general section on constrained systems.
