Unity in the Multiplicity of Suárez’s Soul
What is explored in this essay is Suárez’s commitment to the ‘Achilles problem,’ i.e. whether the mere possibility of representational content entails the simplicity of soul. The essay focuses on the role that aggregation played in the Suárez’s conception of the unification of soul and its faculties. It is argued that Suárez’s critique of the Franciscian doctrine of aggregation and his commitment to the distinctness of the soul’s power from the soul entailed that he could not have accepted anything like the famous Achilles argument for the simplicity of the soul.
