Basic sciences in problem-based learning
Basic sciences are generally defined as the scientific foundation of clinical reasoning and medical practice. This chapter discusses basic sciences in problem-based learning (PBL). At present, Maastricht has a Z-shaped curriculum, with an emphasis on the theory and learning of fundamental aspects and basic sciences at the beginning, as well as a gradual shift of focus towards practice, application of knowledge, and clinical performance at the end. The curriculum is now divided into a bachelor phase (years 1–3) and a master phase (years 4–6).
