This chapter subsequently changes tack and explores alternative systems of capitalism, with the objective of using a comparative perspective to generate additional insights into China and its possible trajectory. In particular, it evaluates the forms of capitalism in four other contexts: the United States, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. Some remarks on comparative advantage are examined. It is shown that Michael Porter in 1990 linked the competitiveness of nations to what he called a ‘diamond model’ with four vertices. Throughout this book, it builds on Porter's later insights and recent scholarly research suggesting that comparative advantage may at least partially be a result of the structure of society and the business system.
