This chapter explores poetry that emerged from the Blitz. The numbers of fatalities caused by German raids over England attracted relatively little attention from poets and novelists. Rudyard Kipling's famous revenge fantasy, ‘Mary Postgate’ (1915), stands out as one of the few Great War texts to engage meaningfully with the new threat from the air. But by the late 1930s, and with the added stimulus of Guernica's annihilation by the Luftwaffe in April 1937, writers had new and sufficient reason to revisit fears of aerial attack.
