This chapter examines religious and legal discourse in Achaemenid Iran. It focuses on two aspects of the Achaemenid period. The first is the characteristics of law, defined by the ruler, and justice, as determined by the ruler, as well as those virtues required from both ruler and subject to guarantee them. The second is Achaemenid legal practice as theorized by an imperial law, which has been the subject of intensive scholarly analysis and debate for the past decade.
