Below are listed twenty-six doctoral theses on Rahul Sankrityayan. Of them,46 twenty-three relate to Sankrityayan’s literary output, two to his involvement in the peasant movement (S.Nos 22 and 26) in Bihar, and another to the process of altering his identity (S.No. 25). The sign ‘◆◆’ following English translations of titles indicates works I was able to access. The name of the university is not mentioned when not known; in that case, then, the place-name indicates the place of study. Twenty-five theses were written in Hindi in India, and one in German in Germany. All English translations of the titles are mine.

All dissertations were written and/or published after the demise of Sankrityayan in 1963. The first one was completed in 1965. After the publication of the twelfth dissertation in 1975 there is a gap of sixteen years until 1991, when Hildegard Fischer published an analysis of Sankrityayan’s historical novel Siṃh senāpati and made a translation of it from Hindi into German.

A huge loss to Hindi literature was felt following Sankrityayan’s loss of memory (in December 1961) and eventual death (in April 1963), and in response many researchers became inspired to study his life and work. From 1965 to 1975 many fruits of these studies were published, followed by the lull. After a decade or so, however, the topic attracted renewed interest, the reason being that in 1993–4 Sankrityayan’s centennial anniversary was looming, with anticipated celebrations in India and many other countries. The last decade of the 20th century continued to produce many dissertations on Sankrityayan along with many other non-academic works. Numerous Indian journals dedicated volumes to Sankrityayan, and many symposiums were organized both in India and abroad. Some centennial anniversary volumes47 were also (p.295) published upon the occasion. The Indian government issued a commemorative postal stamp in 1993. In this way, the grand celebration of his centennial anniversary in and outside India encouraged people to continue work on Sankrityayan. Further, India’s Kendrīya Hindi Saṃsthān [Central Hindi Organization] established the Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan Award in 1983 to honour two writers every year for outstanding contributions to Hindi travel literature and research relating to Hindi literature, respectively.48 (p.296)
