This chapter challenges the consensus that has emerged over the last decade concerning Nietzsche's later political philosophy, namely that it is radically antidemocratic. It argues that, contrary to appearances, Nietzsche is not committed to an antidemocratic politics. In fact, he is committed to democracy—not simply, as several interpreters have already argued, that his principles commit him to democracy, but that he himself recognizes that they do. The chapter also offers an account of his objection to egalitarianism, understood as the doctrine that human beings are of equal worth.
