(p.v) For Eleanor Owens, in memory

The unwavering support encouragement from my maternal grandmother, Eleanor Owens, is what helped me to accomplish my goals. When I felt as if I did not belong in my first graduate seminar, she reminded me that I had a specialized knowledge that was needed in that classroom. She has been my biggest cheerleader—even if she did not fully understand what I do as a political scientist. She taught me to be unabashedly proud of who I was even if others sought to belittle me and my academic contributions. This book is dedicated to her. Furthermore, I thank God for allowing me the fortunate opportunity to develop a special bond with her during her twilight years. I am honored to carry on her legacy. (p.vi)
