This chapter discusses the recent phenomenon of re-enactment or re-performance of historical modern dance works that were part of a radical avant-garde. Drawing on Walter Benjamin’s idea of the Angelus Novus and his ideas about reactivating histories of the oppressed past, it argues that some recent re-performances intervene in the present through the way they offer a critical intervention in ideas about history and memory. The works discussed in this chapter reveal the relations of power whose aim is to regulate normative discourses of history and memory. Memories are collective and thus a common resource, one that can keep alive alternative ways of thinking, feeling, and living. The chapter explores these ideas through discussions of pieces by Faustin Linyekula, Olga de Soto, Martin Nachbar, and Fabián Barba.
