The Land and the People
The chapter examines the history of the borderlands, with the special focus on the interplay between the internal divides such as ethnicity, culture, and socio‐economic status and the security concerns of the imperial powers. Special attention is accorded to the historical circumstances that led to the distinctive state policies and patterns of inter‐ethnic relations in the Austro‐Hungarian and Russian imperial domains.
