La Rochefoucauld’s analyses of self-deception do not fall under a unified explanatory framework. He shows how it is generated in social interaction, but it also results from our ignorance of bodily processes acting on the will, and of psychological processes (the mind is deceived by the heart and above all by self-love: yet self-love can foster awareness as well as ignorance of our shortcomings). In practice, we can have a sufficient knowledge of ourselves for successful social interaction with others, but this involves knowledge not only of our personal qualities but also of the entitlements and obligations of our social position.

Keywords:   Rochefoucauld, self-deception, self-love
