This chapter considers the factors which affected the pace of migration, and which eventually led to a change in the pattern of migration as the labour surplus phase came to an end. Topics discussed include German migration and urbanization compared with other countries, measuring gross and net migration, sources of migrants, differences in migration by sex, German emigration, and immigration into Germany during 1870-1913.
