This chapter analyses the activities of United Irish League (UIL) branches at the local level. The UIL branches constituted themselves as land courts that tried persons who were accused of breaking the ‘law of the League’, and imposed penalties on those whom they convicted. In this respect, the League courts were at the interface between the ideology and the practice of the United Irish League. League branches did not merely offer their support to the UIL's agrarian programme, they attempted to enforce that programme in the parishes where they existed.
