This chapter looks at the role of popular culture in promoting adversarial ideology in the legal system in the United States. It suggests that popular culture, particularly television and film, has taught generations of American that lawyer-controlled trials are the only way to uncover the truth and attain substantive justice. It explains that the adversary ideology presupposes that the best way to attain justice is to have two attorneys fight it out, then leave the decision to a neutral fact-finder.
