The focus of this chapter turns to the surviving East Roman Empire ruled from Constantinople. The Eastern Empire’s ability to survive the crisis of the fifth century is explained in terms of a détente in military relations with Sasanian Persia. The revival of warfare with Persia in the early sixth century placed mounting pressure on a regime that was already faced with growing internal social, fiscal, and religious difficulties. The attempt of the Emperor Justinian to respond to these challenges is examined, and the arrival and impact of bubonic plague detailed and discussed.
