This introductory chapter explains the objective of this book, which is to provide a better understanding of the forces influencing the direction and development of European Union (EU) social policy through an analysis of the situation within anti-discrimination law. This book discusses two specific grounds of discrimination and examines their development within EU law and policy, one involving race and another involving sexual orientation. It also discusses the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and Article 13 of the European Community law.
