This introductory chapter begins with a description of the intention of the book, which is to discuss a sampling of Irish popular and minor fiction published between 1890 and 1922, and this is followed by a briefer survey of women's fiction, 1922-1940. It argues that the portrait of Ireland in fiction departs from the stories told under the auspices of the Irish Literary Revival. The Irish Literary Revival is discussed.
