Abstract

This book examines the use of a defendant's character in the criminal trial. It looks at the use of character evidence to prove guilt and as a factor affecting sentence. It also discusses character as the basis for culpability in criminal law. The book includes an in-depth examination of the provisions of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 on the admissibility of evidence of a defendant's bad character, as well as of the common law which these provisions replaced.
