This chapter provides an introduction to the topics of this book — the metaphysics of laws of nature and of natural properties. Three views of laws are introduced: the regularity view; the nomic necessitation view, and the dispositional essentialist view. Two conceptions of property are introduced: categorical properties and potencies (essentially dispositional properties). A taxonomy of views about laws and properties and their relations is articulated. An outline of the book is drawn.

Keywords:   laws of nature, natural properties, categorical property, potency
