This chapter was inspired by the Lex Irnitana, a copy of the Flavian municipal law which was discovered in the south of Spain in 1981. It offered many new insights into the working of the Roman legal system and, more particularly, into the procedures of the Roman courts. The chapter highlights the importance of law in spreading that essentially urban Roman culture which has helped to shape Western civilization.
