This chapter gives a broad sketch of the agricultural landscape of the Vesuvian region in the first century AD, using both material and textual evidence. After giving an overview of the landscape of the region around Vesuvius, De Simone discusses the evidence for wine production, cereals, oleiculture, horticulture, and woodland farming in the territories of Naples, Pompeii, and Nola. The emerging picture suggests, for the entire Vesuvian region, a highly integrated and specialized agricultural economy, in which these cities, for certain agricultural products, were dependent on the territory of neighbouring cities and on the outside world, whilst other products were produced for export. While the region appears to have been dependent on imported grain, it exported substantial quantities of wine.
