Abstract

This book is an exploration of Virgil's use of sources in the Aeneid, considering matters of history, geography, mythology, and ethnography. Taking as its focus the ‘matter’ of the text — such as details of colour, material, landscape, and physiology — the book unpicks the meaning and implications of Virgil's heavily allusive style, including practices and techniques of composition, in particularly difficult and intricate passages.
