“Exemplification and Overall Discussion of the Comprehensive Approach” uses mathematics curricular resources and records of school mathematics practice to exemplify the comprehensive approach for studying curricular resources (such as textbooks) and their classroom use. The comprehensive approach, which is the more encompassing of the two main approaches discussed in this book, provides: (1) a way to examine the fidelity of implementation of curricular tasks in the classroom; and (2) a way to explain the observed fidelity of implementation through the synthesis of different teacher characteristics and classroom factors. In addition to exemplifying the comprehensive approach, this chapter includes a discussion of the possible domains of application of the approach, and of the situations in which it could be particularly useful or appropriate. Limitations of the approach are also considered.
