“Description of the Comprehensive Approach” presents the comprehensive approach for studying curricular resources (such as textbooks) and their classroom use. This approach, which is the more encompassing of the two main approaches discussed in the book, provides: (1) a way to examine the fidelity of implementation of curricular tasks in the classroom (i.e., the degree to which the classroom implementation of curricular tasks is faithful to their design as presented in the curricular resources from which they are derived); and (2) a way to explain the observed fidelity of implementation, through the synthesis of various teacher characteristics and classroom factors. Despite the encompassing nature of the comprehensive approach, and the fact that it can be applied potentially to any kind of task and classroom setting, its application for a large number of tasks and across different classrooms can be particularly demanding.
