This chapter considers the nature of musicality and related issues. It sets out what we know about the heritability of musicality at a species and individual level and its possible evolutionary purpose; discusses the implications of the existence of prodigies, savants, absolute pitch, and tone deafness; outlines public conceptions of musical ability and what skills might be needed to be a professional working with music in the twenty-first century; discusses the implications of neuropsychological findings for understanding the concept of musicality; and sets out the principles underpinning the expertise paradigm and the evidence related to it. The chapter concludes with a consideration of the practical implications of current conceptions of musicality.
