This appendix contains a brief historical digest of the modern theory of the will, from Descartes and Hobbes in the seventeenth century to James and Russell in the twentieth century, for readers unfamiliar with the historical sources. It is not by any means a substitute for reading them, but it includes the key ideas to which the argument in Chapter 1 refers.

Keywords:   Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Reid, Bentham, Mill, Bain, James, Russell
