This chapter re-analyses Darwin’s maize data that were introduced in Chapter 2. Here t-tests and confidence intervals are used and compared with the ANOVA approach. Confidence intervals are introduced as a way to quantify confidence in estimates. Least significant differences are used to visually demonstrate when two means are significantly different from each other. The key assumptions underlying both the t-test and ANOVA analyses are assessed using R’s default residual-checking plots.
