This chapter works out the thermally activated magnetic relaxation, which is responsible for the high temperature behaviour of the SMM. The concept of magnetic relaxation is correctly formalized and the role of phonons is described in detail to justify the observed thermal relaxation of the Arrhenius type. More exotic concepts like coherence and superradiance are introduced, taking into account the role of photons in the relaxation mechanism. The chapter concludes with a critical discussion on the validity of the suggested models.

Keywords:   spin-phonon, Arrhenius, coherence, superradiance photons
