All the above treatments have implicitly assumed a perfect array of SMMs. This chapter discusses the role of disorder. Two main forms of disorder are taken into consideration, namely, dislocations and microscopic defects. The effect of a distribution of tunnel frequencies associated with disorder on the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg experiment is described, and the theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results on Mn12ac. The possibility of a spin glass structure is also considered.

Keywords:   disorder, dislocations, spin glass, Landau-Zener-Stückelberg
