This chapter sets out the objectives and scope of this book, the overarching aim of which is to develop a framework for analysing the interaction between selection, phylogeny, and constraint in the context of biomechanical systems. Simple examples from biology and engineering are used to introduce the general themes that are developed in later chapters with the aid of more complex biomechanical examples.
