This chapter examines the role of cortical networks in invariant pattern recognition. It describes neural network approaches to invariant pattern recognition and explains that once an invariant representation has been computed by a sensory system, it is in a form which is suitable for presentation to a pattern association or autoassociation neural network. It discusses the preprocessing that the visual system performs in the stages as far as the primary visual cortex and identifies networks that can perform invariant pattern recognition.
