Infancy research is a great field of study, but attempts in relation to musicology have a very short history of interest. The study on the topic has only recently gathered attention due to progress in the neurosciences, which have enabled researchers to probe into the effects of music and audition as presented by brain activity and behavioural studies; and the growing influence from biological studies on the development of species, which can be explained by studying species-specific means of evolutionary adaptation: human forms of communication, consciousness, and culture. This chapter contains insights acquired by the researcher while exploring early musicality in relation to means of evolutionary adaptation. The researcher also reviews evidence of the development of infant capacities, which may relate to the start of human communication, thinking, and cultural integration. This chapter also examines how involved musicality – sensitivity to music, predisposition to processing musical experiences and expression of musical skill – is to communication, thinking, and culture.
