This introductory chapter begins with a brief analysis of the Procrustes story for which there are three elements: the unfortunate traveller, who we label X1 , the Procrustean bed X2 , and the treatment, T. It then discusses current research into the Procrustean method, closed form and algorithmic solutions, and notations used throughout the book. An overview of the chapters included in this volume is presented.
