This chapter presents a reprint of a paper by Lauritzen (1981), which tries to explain the basic contents of Thiele (1880) in modern terms. Specifically, it discusses T. N. Thiele's paper on a particular time series model he used in a problem of astronomical geodesy, more precisely in connection with the problem of determining the distance from Copenhagen to Lund (Sweden). Although the paper has been overlooked by today's statisticians, it contains remarkable results that are interesting even today and not just from a historical point of view.
