This chapter presents annual data for Iceland on national sales of all types of tobacco products including cigarettes, pipes and cigars, and smokeless tobacco products for the years 1862–1995. These data are also presented on a per-adult basis. Data on the transition from plain to filter cigarettes are sparse. Survey-based data are presented on the sex- and age-specific prevalence of smoking from 1968, and on amount smoked from 1983. The data shown are mostly nationally based, supplemented by relevant data from international and early regional studies. Surveys of adolescents and adults are included. Appropriate attention is given to the varying definitions and methodologies of the source material, while presenting data in a consistent format. Summary estimates for all adults are presented. Sources of data are fully cited.
