This chapter outlines trade between Japanese colonial Taiwan and Mainland China. While Taiwan's economy was firmly integrated into the Japanese economy and the bulk of Taiwan's trade was conducted with Japan during the period under discussion, there were important trade connections between Taiwan and China, which gave Taiwanese merchants an opportunity to get trade experience. Japan's focus on investment in Manchuria and North China allowed Taiwanese capital to flow into South China. Taiwanese merchants were able to exploit business opportunities provided by the Japanese empire, also they were able to speak Chinese and felt they had cultural similarities with China.
