The Last Triumph and Demise
When the Sharett drama neared its end, the last major encounter with Ben–Gurion was still looming. As related at the beginning of this volume, this confrontation would take place at the first session of Mapai's Tenth Convention held on 16 February 1965. In the meantime, all three camps in Mapai were preparing for the expected show-down between Ben–Gurion and his faction and the rest of the party. The ‘veteran and central leaders’, including most of the party apparatus and Sharett, were closing ranks behind Eshkol and the Troika. The Ben–Gurion faction, led by the ‘old man’, Dayan, Peres, and Almogi, was backed by a large bloc of Mapai members in Tel Aviv and of the Moshavim movement.
