Chapter 5 discussed the extent to which people’s commitment to principles influenced the actions they would take when confronted with specific scenarios that raised practical issues of rights and liberties. This chapter focuses on the institutional mechanisms of liberty and equality rather than specific issues and policies. Egalitarians may not care too much about the mechanisms by which they achieve their goals. But liberals care intensely.
