Wisdom and the Reign of Solomon

Wisdom and the Reign of Solomon

(p.110) 7 Wisdom and the Reign of Solomon
Early Israelite Wisdom

Stuart Weeks

Oxford University Press

This chapter addresses the following questions: how historically reliable are the biblical traditions about Solomon's reign, and what can be deduced from those traditions about the origins and nature of wisdom literature in Israel? It examines the claim that the state administrative system in Israel was modelled after the Egyptian system. It argues that this claim has little to commend it, and thus any supposed imitation of the Egyptian administration cannot be used as evidence for the nature of Israelite wisdom.
