(p.6) 1 Using the Non-Israelite Sources
Early Israelite Wisdom

Weeks Stuart

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses how non-Israelite sources can be used to further the understanding of Proverbs. Although there is no straightforward answer to this, a brief examination of some previous attempts helps clarify issues and set some ground-rules. The chapter draws examples principally from the study of Prov. 1-9, and is arranged according to the aspect of literature which is intended to be elucidated through comparison with the foreign texts.
