After Jowett
Jowett was succeeded as master of Balliol by Edward Caird, Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow and a leading figure in the British Idealist school. Caird was a Balliol man, but not at all a typical one. He had been born in 1835 and his education had been interrupted by general ill-health; it was not until 1860 that he went to Balliol on a Snell exhibition. He was, therefore, much older even than most of the Scots who came to the college and, since postgraduate students in the modern sense did not exist, he read Greats, completing the school in 1863. Caird first encountered Hegel through Jowett's lectures, but it was Green who was the pre-eminent influence in his undergraduate life.
