The chapter explores the various outlooks of prison staff located in Albany and Long Lartin regarding ‘control’ and ‘control problems,’ central to the notions of their importance and duties. Responses are gathered through interviews that also evaluate the morality and the job satisfaction of each randomly selected participant. Concerns involve the officers' self-regard with respect to the institutions they work for, the individual diversity in approaching and supervising the prisoners, the conception of possible conflicts and other repercussions about the implementation of regulations and sanctions, the occurrence of discretions and fairness, the types of management techniques, the intervention of higher officials (most commonly those who are not literally assigned in the prisoner community) when injustice and maltreatment take place, and the connection of personal dispositions to the origin of ‘control problems’.
