This chapter argues that cases in which we seem unable to do without the corresponding ordinary-speech devices are not at all recondite, and it is not evident that their symbolic representation requires the device of abstraction; what it does require is the careful use of quantifiers. It then discusses quantification inside and outside belief-contexts.

Keywords:   abstraction, quantifiers, quantification, belief-contexts
