This chapter discusses the epistemological role of experiences, arguing that experiences do not merely cause beliefs, but contribute to their justification. In dealing with questions about justification, many philosophers restrict themselves to the circle of beliefs. Experiences or stimulations enter the picture as causal determinants of beliefs rather than justifiers. It is argued that experiences themselves contribute to the justification of beliefs about the world around us and that when they do other beliefs are always implicated. A belief about the environment never derives its justification from experience alone.
