The two earlier considered questions of want and belief conflicts about volitions as such were: does the desire for there to be real volitions have a coherent content?; and is there good evidence for the non-existence of real volitions which is better evidence than any for their existence? Having failed in the previous chapters to find any incoherence in the content of the desire, this chapter examines the evidential status of the opposing belief. Arguments against the existence of volitions are considered in the first section. In the second section, some arguments for supposing that they do exist, inspite of possible contradictions along the way, are discussed.
