The Impact of a Revolutionary Crisis
This chapter examines the impact of the French Revolution on modern capitalism in France and on the businesses of Pierre-François Tubeuf and the Maréchal de Castries, particularly in the Ales region. It suggests that the economic change associated with the French Revolution determined the behaviour of certain social groups and the political options they espoused. It argues that the periodic bouts of industrial violence in the Ales region are linked to the trauma of a proto-industrialized population experiencing the misery of economic recession and political upheaval.
