Factory and Soviet Elections

(p.87) 6 Factory and Soviet Elections
Bread and Justice

To the Bolsheviks it was clear that the socialist revolutionaries (SRs) had won a majority in the Constituent Assembly because they had gained the votes of sometimes misguided, sometimes backward peasants, and that justified its dissolution. But it was one thing to accept that peasants in faraway villages might vote SR, another to contemplate losing the support of the Petrograd workers. And it was from the factories themselves, in the spring of 1918, that calls for the reelection of deputies were coming, elections which the Bolsheviks could no longer be confident of winning. To understand the changing electoral scene, some sense of the impact of the economic crisis is needed.
