This introductory chapter sets the scene by describing Kreva, the small town and castle in which the founding act of the Polish-Lithuanian union was signed in August 1365. It gives a brief history of Kreva and stresses the importance of the decision that was taken in the Krewo Act. The chapter introduces Jogaila/Jagiełło, Jadwiga and other leading characters in the drama to follow. It concludes by pointing out that the Krewo Act and the changes it initiated established one of the longest and most successful political unions in European history.
