The Feudal Background
This chapter begins with a discussion of the years of anarchy and decay after the last emperor of the Roman Empire in the West had been deposed. It then turns to the two great institutions that regulated, shaped, and permeated the Middle Ages: Christianity and Feudalism. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the structures and processes in the medieval regnum.
